Discovery holiday with walking, history and nature - small international group - northern Spain

The Asturian 'green coast', with its small bays, sandy beaches and cliffs overhanging the Atlantic, is a year-round paradise, with unsurpassable seafood and unforgettable sunsets. Visit its rich historical, agricultural and industrial legacy, its towns and ports on the
rías, and wander in the splendid countryside of Asturias, a third of whose territory is protected. Taste the delicious Asturian cuisine: fish and shellfish, cheeses, fabada and pote, and partake in the ceremonial of cider quaffing!

ONE WEEK Activities: varied visits and excursions; 5 walks of about 1h30-3h (in flattish terrain, max denivellation +50m). Group 8 maximum.

EXCEPT 2 LUNCHES & 2 DINNERS, in rooms for two (private bathrooms): 7 nights in the small seaside town of Candás, in a comfortable hotel overlooking the fishing port and beach: ideal for morning or evening bathing.

RENDEZVOUS Bilbao airport in the afternoon - choose a flight arriving before 15.00.
DISPERSAL Bilbao airport in the late morning - choose a flight departing after 13.30.
Arrival at, and departure from, Asturias (Oviedo) airport is also possible.

Location of this programme:

THURSDAY: Transfer to Candás.

FRIDAY: Singular descent into a recreated coal mine where we experience the sensations of the miners at work. Santa Cristina de Lena, one of the best examples of Asturian pre-romanesque architecture, showing Visigothic, Byzantine and Moorish influence. The miners' train of Samuño with a walk in its verdant valley.

SATURDAY: Landscapes and traditions of Candás: fish conserves; open-air sculptures and works of the candesino artist Antón. Spectacular cliff-edge walk on an old railway line.

SUNDAY: The dolmens of Monte Areo. Ramble in the steps of Clarín, the well-known 19th century writer, whose family had a summer residence near Candás, and who amply described the area in his works. An Astur-Roman fortress perched on a cliff-top overlooking the ocean and the port of Gijón.

MONDAY: Oviedo: Clarín called it 'Vetusta'; the capital of the region (and formerly of the kingdom of Asturias) is a lively city, known for its cathedral, its multicoloured market in the alleys of the old town, and its marvellous pre-romanesque buildings.

TUESDAY: Villaviciosa ['the town of abundance'] and the estuarine life of its ría; the famous El Gaitero cider factory and the Asturian church of Valdediós.

WEDNESDAY: The prehistoric paintings of the Candamo cave and the wild scenery of the cape of Cabo Peñas, the most northerly point of Asturias.

THURSDAY: Transfer to Bilbao airport.
