Guided walking, history, nature - north-central Spain

The Rioja Alta is one of the three traditional divisions of the Rioja wine region, but the name also well describes the little-known mountainous south of the province, with the high peaks of the Cameros, Sierra Cebollera natural park and Sierra de la Demanda.

ONE WEEK Activities: 5 mountain walks of 3h-4h30 and one short walk, on (sometimes steep and/or stony) paths; denivellations of up to +400m/day; visits: monasteries, bodega, caves, chapel and the transhumance museum. Group 8 maximum.

in rooms for two (private bathrooms) in the historical Venta de Piqueras, at an altitude of 1340 metres. A warm welcome and excellent local cuisine.

Location of this programme:

WEDNESDAY: Short transfer from Soria to the Venta Piqueras, in the Sierra Cebollera Natural Park in the Rioja Alta.

THURSDAY: The Iregua Roman road joined the important city of Numantia (Soria) to the Ebro river-port of Vareia (Logroño), via the Piqueras pass. The monumental village of Villoslada de Cameros.

FRIDAY: The adorable former Visigothic monastery of Suso at San Millán de la Cogolla, cradle of the Castilian language and UNESCO world heritage. The chapel of Tricio, one of the oldest religious buildings in Spain. Visit to a reputed bodega of Rioja wines. Spectacular short walk amid immense conical cliffs, forming monumental natural towers and castles.

SATURDAY: Fiesta de la Trashumancia. We become shepherds to accompany a flock of 200 merinos on the last part of the transhumance route to the Venta de Piqueras, and relive the goodbye fête which celebrated the departure of the transhumant shepherds each autumn. Their music, crafts and food are on the agenda!

SUNDAY: The Puente Ra walk, in the steps of the transhumant shepherds and their flocks. The wonderful formations of the Ortigosa caves.

MONDAY: The valle de la Leza and the fantastic cliffs of Soto en Cameros, with a big vulture colony.

TUESDAY: Walk of the hamlets of Lumbreras, in the heart of the Natural Park. The museum of transhumance, until recently the most important activity of the area.

WEDNESDAY: Transfer to Soria.
