Location of this programme:

DAY-TO-DAY
WEDNESDAY: Transfer to Liérganes. Exploration of the village: the legend of the Hombre Pez.

THURSDAY: Santoña: the fishing port par excellence of the Cantabrian coast. We visit a cannery where anchovies are still processed by hand, and the salt-marsh natural park, including a tidal mill. Sea food lunch, free time on the beach of Berria.

FRIDAY: An excursion to the western Cantabrian coast, including the delightful fishing town of San Vicente de la Barquera, with a panoramic walk along the ocean cliffs, and the enchanted Saja valley.

SATURDAY: A short ramble in the beautiful upper Miera valley, then we visit the ethnographical museum of the Valles Pasiegos at Vega de Pas and the Cueva del Castillo, at Puente Viesgo, which has some of the world's oldest cave paintings. The two Romanesque churches of Santa María de Cayón.

SUNDAY: A day in Santander, arriving by boat across the famous Bay. The Magdalena royal palace, the mediaeval city wall and the fabulous new archaeological museum. Bathing possible.

MONDAY: Along the heights of the Bustablado: good views of the summits of the Cantabrian mountains. Karst formations in the Collados del Asón natural park.

TUESDAY: We walk to the neighbouring village of La Cavada, notable in the past for its foundry which provided cannons for Spain's navy, fed by the waters of the Miera and its tributaries, the iron mines of the Peña Cabarga, and charcoal from the forests of the upper valleys. Return by the FEVE narrow-gauge railway (this was reputedly built so that King Alfonso XIII and his family could travel easily from their summer palace in Santander to take the waters at Liérganes!). A last overall view of Cantabria from the heights of Peña Cabarga.
