DAY-TO-DAY
WEDNESDAY: Transfer to Liérganes. Exploration of the village: the legend of the Hombre Pez.

THURSDAY: Santoña: the fishing port par excellence of the Cantabrian coast. We visit a cannery where anchovies are still processed by hand, and the salt-marsh natural park, including a tidal mill. Sea food lunch, free time on the beach of Berria.

FRIDAY: An excursion to the western Cantabrian coast, including the delightful fishing town of San Vicente de la Barquera, with a panoramic walk along the ocean cliffs, and the enchanted Saja valley.

SATURDAY: A day in Santander, arriving by the FEVE narrow-gauge railway (this was built so that King Alfonso XIII and his family could travel easily from their summer palace in Santander to take the waters at Liérganes!). The house and library of the philologist and historian Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, the markets and the fabulous new archaeological museum. A boat excursion around the famous Bay shows us the Magdalena royal palace, the Sardinero beach, the islets, capes, dunes and light-houses.

SUNDAY: A short ramble in the beautiful upper Miera valley, then we visit the ethnographical museum of the Valles Pasiegos at Vega de Pas and the Cueva del Castillo, at Puente Viesgo, which has some of the world's oldest cave paintings. The two Romanesque churches of Santa María de Cayón.

MONDAY: Along the heights of the Bustablado: good views of the summits of the Cantabrian mountains. Karst formations in the Collados del Asón natural park.

TUESDAY: We walk to the neighbouring village of La Cavada, notable in the past for its foundry which provided cannons for Spain's navy, fed by the waters of the Miera and its tributaries, the iron mines of the Peña Cabarga, and charcoal from the forests of the upper valleys. An overall view of Cantabria from the heights of Peña Cabarga.
