Uncastillo is one of the Cinco Villas, a remarkable group of fortified small towns situated at the foot of the verdant Sierra de Santo Domingo in the pre-Pyrenees, very interesting themselves and within easy reach of some superb historical & natural monuments: dolmens, monasteries, castles, the Lumbier gorge, Bardenas desert, Mallos de Agüero, Hecho valley...

7 DAYS (6 NIGHTS) Activities: a variety of visits and five walks of 1-3 hours, based at Uncastillo, in the pre-Pyrenees of northern Aragon. Group 10 maximum.

RENDEZVOUS & DISPERSAL Zaragoza (city centre, station or airport). Zaragoza is 1h15 from Madrid and 1h25 from Barcelona by hourly high speed (AVE) trains; both cities have direct suburban trains from airport to main stations. There is also an international airport at Zaragoza, and a direct train service from Hendaye/Irun. Ask us for travel information - we can book train tickets for you.

Location of this programme:

DAY-TO-DAY
WEDNESDAY: Afternoon transfer (at 16.00) from Zaragoza to Uncastillo, with a stop at Tauste: Mudéjar churches, one with a magnificent former minaret-watchtower as belfry.

THURSDAY: Via Sos, northernmost of the Cinco Villas, we find the Camino francés, with the town of Sangüesa, Leyre monastery and a ramble through the historic Lumbier gorge with its numerous vultures.

FRIDAY: The most northerly point on our route, the superb valley of Hecho: Siresa Mozarabic church and a walk on a trans-Pyrenean Roman road, now a branch of the Camino de Santiago, through a spectacular gorge and forest. The 'cradle of Aragón': Santa Cruz de la Serós and San Juan de la Peña monastery.

SATURDAY: We follow the pre-Pyrenean ridge, with visits to the mediaeval village of Biel, the Romanesque castle of Loarre and the natural 'castles' of the cliffs of Los Mallos de Agüero, which we circle on foot.

SUNDAY: A day devoted to an in-depth exploration of Uncastillo, including the castle, Jewish quarter, Romanesque churches and the walk of the Puente de los Judíos.

MONDAY: A bodega of organic wines. Exploration (on foot and by 4WD) of the Roman site of Los Bañales — with aqueduct — and the curious Bardenas desert.

TUESDAY: Transfer to Zaragoza (arriving around 11.30).
