Walking in the land of the glacial lakes — this biosphere reserve and natural park borders on Galicia and Portugal, and contains the largest glacial lake in Europe and largest natural lake in Spain.

ONE WEEK Activities: 4 days with walks of 3h15-4h15 (denivellation max +350m); catamaran trip on the Lago de Sanabria; 2 days of excursions with shorter walks of about 2h30. Group 10 maximum.

FULL BOARD

If flying to Madrid, you should take a plane scheduled to arrive by 13.00, and the last day, one departing after 16.00. We can book your train tickets in advance and send them to you. DAY-TO-DAY

THURSDAY: Short transfer to Ribadelago, on the edge of the Lago de Sanabria, UNESCO biosphere reserve.

FRIDAY: On the bucolic pathways around picturesque Galende and Robledillo, and the flowery upper valley of the Tera. The Casa del Parque Natural de Sanabria.

SATURDAY: Splendid landscapes of the Sierra de la Culebra. Wolf reserve. Historical centre of Puebla de Sanabria: castle, noble houses, churches, sentry walk.

SUNDAY: Ascent through a luxuriant forest of oaks, hazels, holly and whitebeam, to the Laguna de Carros, on a flowery plateau with views over the Lago de Sanabria. In the afternoon, boat exploration of the lake: we observe its underwater flora, fauna and geology via a biologist-diver who carries a radio and camera.

MONDAY: By the traditional tracks, edged by drystone walls, where ox-carts [carros] once circulated between the mountain villages... and the tragic site of Ribadelago Viejo.

TUESDAY: Excursion to Los Valles, the lands enclosed between the rivers Orbigo and Tera (whose source is the Lago de Sanabria), inhabited at least since Neolithic times, as we shall see from the dolmens, the Astur fortified village of Arrabalde and the Roman villa of Camarzana, as well as the monastery of Santa Marta de Tera, of C10 origin. The 400 wine cellars of Morales del Rey.

WEDNESDAY: The high lakes of Los Peces, Las Yeguas and Ventosa (1905m), with numerous cows and horses grazing. Summits with heather and brooms in multicoloured flower, and here and there a patch of snow.

THURSDAY: Transfer to Puebla de Sanabria station.
