ONE WEEK Activities: exploration of Cantabria, with 5 walks of 3-4h on occasionally steep and/or stony paths; denivellations of up to +350m/day; a variety of visits. Group 10 maximum.
FULL BOARD EXCEPT THREE MEALS, in rooms for 2 (private bathrooms) in comfortable posadas of charm: two nights in a surprising neo-Mudéjar building in the delightful spa village of Liérganes and five in pretty Escalante, in the Salt Marshes Natural Park on the Asón estuary.

Location of this programme:
WEDNESDAY: A short transfer from Bilbao brings us to the tiny spa resort of Liérganes, where we stay two nights. We discover its maze of shady alleys and the legend of the Hombre Pez.
THURSDAY: Circuit in the beautiful upper Miera valley. Lunch, visit to Liérganes and free time. Afternoon stroll from Liérganes via the Miera baja to La Cavada, and return by the FEVE narrow-gauge train.
FRIDAY: The Cabeceras de Alisas walk, with views of the Cantábricos, the fertile middle valleys and the distant Atlantic. Arrival at Escalante (5 nights). Visit to a tidal mill and short walk of the Mies.
SATURDAY: Day in the regional capital Santander, arriving by boat across the Bay. The house and library of the philologist and historian Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, the markets and the fabulous new archaeological museum. Some free time.
SUNDAY: Peña Cabarga, with superb views towards both the sea and the mountains, and some surprising archaeological remains. In the afternoon, the prehistoric caves of Puente Viesgo and two delightful Romanesque churches.
MONDAY: Santoña: the fishing port par excellence of the Cantabrian coast and formerly an important naval base. Walk of the Monte Buciero with splendid sea-cliffs, Atlantic coastal forest and fortifications of the 16th-19th centuries. Visit to a cannery where anchovies are still processed by hand, and a stroll in the salt-marshes. Free time on the beach of Berria.
TUESDAY: Collados del Asón Natural Park.
WEDNESDAY: Transfer to Bilbao airport.
