Location of this programme:

DAY-TO-DAY
WEDNESDAY: Transfer to the Picos de Europa and Tielve hamlet in the Valle del Duje, where we stay three nights at a farm-inn known for its award-winning Cabrales blue cheese.

THURSDAY: The majadas of Valfrío and Tobaos, past grazing cows and sheep whose milk is used for Cabrales cheese, with magnificent views of the Picos summits.

FRIDAY: Walking in the Sierra de Andara, a limestone labyrinth forming the easternmost part of the high Picos de Europa. Possibility to spot rebecos [Spanish chamois].

SATURDAY: The superb 'self-guided' path of the unforgettable Garganta del Cares, justifiably one of the most famous gorge walks in Europe, ending with lunch at the very isolated hamlet of Caín. Transfer via the Los Beyos defile, the Fito viewpoint and Priesca pre-Romanesque church, to Candás on the Costa Verde. Four nights in a comfortable hotel overlooking the fishing port and beach: ideal for morning or evening bathing. Excellent seafood!

SUNDAY: Circuit of the dolmens of Monte Areo. The wild scenery of the cape of Cabo Peñas, the most northerly point of Asturias.

MONDAY: Ramble in the steps of Clarín, the well-known 19th century writer, whose family had a summer residence near Candás, and who amply described the area in his works. Visit to an artisanal cider factory. In the late afternoon, a cliff-edge walk with open-air sculptures and works of the candesino artist Antón.

TUESDAY: Oviedo: Clarín called it 'Vetusta'; the capital of the region (and formerly of the kingdom of Asturias) is a lively city, known for its cathedral, its multicoloured market in the alleys of the old town, and its marvellous pre-romanesque buildings. In the afternoon, we visit the Cuencas mineras, source of the riches of Asturias: singular descent into a re-created coal mine where we experience the sensations of the miners at work.

WEDNESDAY: Transfer to Bilbao airport.
